Sharing Secrets

MP Quick Tips started as a response to the common interview question of “What advice do you have for upcoming producers?” This came up in nearly every interview. I didn’t want to give generic responses like “be original!” and “find your own sound” that every producer offers. Those words alone are not helpful, even though they are true. These responses drive me crazy. We all get tired of interviews, but most people just hold back. The method of thinking seemed to be “Don’t give away too much or you’ll endanger your career!” Times have changed and this is no longer the case. There are no secrets. Everyone has access to the same information. It’s more about how you apply the techniques.

Selfishly, I began a quest to collect tips to help my own career, so I wouldn’t keep making the same mistakes. It was simply a matter of being centrally organized so I was more efficient in the studio and on the road. Tips for traveling for battling jetlag, tips for recording vocals, tips to organize and maintain computers. There was always something to learn, and ample opportunity to forget it or skip the basics in the process.

My friend Karl Detken, working as the artist rep for Pioneer at the time urged me to tweet daily tips (there are now 300+ tips online). The central idea is reductionreduce complex tips to bite-sized nuggets that would fit in 140 characters. I was tired of reading music tech magazines that pandered mainly to ad sales, and sprawling artist interviews with no real depth or utility. There had to be a better way to explore creativity and provide something with substance.

What’s the point of all this? I created MP Quick Tips to help you make better music, tap into your creative self, melt writer’s block, enjoy travel, and be more efficient with your time. Think of it as life-hacking for music. Dig into the blog, explore the daily tips, and get excited for the print book on the way. You never stop learning – so it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a seasoned expert, you’ll find something useful here.

Enjoy, and I welcome your feedback.
